Swing Dance Family:
We are excited to welcome you to our swing dance community and hope you'll be a frequent visitor. For many of us, Swing dancing is a lifestyle. We are a family and the majority of us frequently dance together at the various venues around town. Many dancers volunteer their time and expertise at Stumptown Dance to make your evening of dance more memorable. Read below about Stumptown Dance, tips on partner dancing, and how to better connect to our community. We look forward to dancing with you and learning more about you. Please feel free to email us if you have any questions and/or comments.

Stumptown Dance:
Stumptown Dance, formerly Westside Swing, began running dances in August 2004 and has been going strong ever since. We are passionate about connecting people with one another while sharing the love of the music and dance from the Swing Era. For additional opportunites to Swing dance in Portland, Oregon visit www.swingout.net, Portland's web-forum for Lindy Hop.

How do I improve?
Dance. Dance. Dance. We can't encourage you enough to simply dance regularly. As a new dancer, the drop-in lesson before a dance is a perfect way to meet new people and learn new steps. You then have several hours to practice your new dance skills on the social, dance floor in a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment. We are blessed in Portland; you have the opportunity to swing dance four to five nights a week in our community!

You can improve more by joining group classes, where skills are taught in a friendly and welcoming environment with a smaller class size. If you really want to excel quickly, private lessons are a fantastic option. (see the Dance Lessons/Workshops page)

A Few Tips:
1. Do not be afraid to ask everyone to dance, even if they are more experienced.
2. While dancing, if you bump into someone, kindly apologize and continue dancing.
3. Come prepared - bring extra shirts and smell nice (deodorant, gum, etc).
4. It is considered impolite to teach on the dance floor unless you are asked for advice.
5. It is usually customary to accept a first request for a dance.
6. Ladies: You are encouraged to ask the men to dance too.  If you don't, they fear that you didn't enjoy dancing with them the last time.
7. Have fun!!!!

See you at the Sunday Swing Dance!!!
